Mistral lets anyone download its biggest AI model, if they have the hardware

On 29 October, Mistral released the weights of Mistral Large 4, its largest model so far. Weights are the files that make a model work, so companies can run it on their own machines.

In short: Good news for companies that want their own AI. Not something you can run on a laptop.

Mistral Large 4 has about one trillion parameters, a rough measure of a model's size. It reads text and images, and works in more than 160 languages.

Anyone can download it from Hugging Face. But even the compressed versions need 512GB of memory or several graphics chips, according to Hugging Face. Most people would use it through a paid service instead, at $0.70 per million tokens of input and $2.10 of output.

Companies that want to sell access to it as a hosted service need a separate licence. Nearly all the test scores so far come from Mistral or its partners, so independent checks are still needed.
