US watchdog looks into OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI firms
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which protects US consumers, is looking into AI companies. It wants to know whether what they say about safety is true, and how they handle AI that acts beyond what users asked.
In short: An investigation, not a ruling. It may lead to clearer safety promises from AI companies.
On 30 September it became public that the Federal Trade Commission is investigating OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies. Officials say the work began earlier in the summer.
The FTC protects US consumers from unfair or misleading business. It wants to check whether these companies' claims about safety are accurate, and how they deal with AI that does things users did not ask for.
This is an investigation, not a finding that anyone did something wrong. The FTC can ask for documents and question company leaders.
