Anthropic releases Claude Opus 5.5: faster, and 40% cheaper to run

Opus 5.5 is the first model in Claude's new 5.5 family. Anthropic says it does most work as well as its top model, runs over 30% faster, and costs 40% less to use than Opus 5.

In short: Better and cheaper at the same time. If you use Claude for long tasks, you get more for your money.

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on 22 September. It is the first model in a new 5.5 family, and Anthropic said Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 would follow within weeks.

The company says Opus 5.5 does most jobs about as well as its most powerful model, Claude Fable 5.1. It also answers more than 30% faster than the model it replaces.

For developers, the price is $4 for every million words-worth of input (tokens) and $20 for output. That is 40% cheaper than Opus 5.

The pattern this year: each new model is both better and cheaper. Waiting a few months often gets you more for less.
