Claude Haiku 5.5 is much cheaper, but read the small print
Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on 7 October. For shorter requests it costs 90% less than Haiku 4.5, and Anthropic puts the average saving at about 75%.
In short: A real price cut for small jobs. Very long requests save less.
Requests up to 100,000 tokens cost $0.10 per million tokens of input and $0.50 of output. A token is a small piece of text. Longer requests cost $0.50 and $2.50, which is 50% less than the old model rather than 90%.
There is one more catch. Anthropic's developer documents say the same text now counts as about 30% more tokens, so the bill does not fall as far as the headline suggests.
Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 suits smaller jobs like summarising. For complicated coding work, it recommends Sonnet 5.5 or Opus 5.5.
