California: an AI can no longer fire someone on its own

California's new “No Robo Bosses Act” says that if a company mostly uses AI to decide to fire or discipline someone, a human must check the decision first. It starts on 1 July 2027.

In short: The first US state law of its kind. Workers also get told what data was used.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 947, the “No Robo Bosses Act”, on 30 September. California is the first US state with a law like this.

If an employer mostly relies on an AI system to fire or discipline a worker, a person has to check that decision using other evidence, such as manager reviews and staff records.

Workers must also be told in writing what data was used, and given a person to contact. The law starts on 1 July 2027.
